Abstract
The global energy consumption has been increasing steadily due to the rapid industrialization and improvement in the living standard of the mankind. The predominant part of power is still produced from the fossil fuels. But, these fuel resources are limited and thus the mankind is forced to find the alternatives for resolving the critical issues associated with the use of fossil fuels such as environmental pollution and global warming. On the other side, most of the power producing industries release thousands of MW of low grade heat into atmosphere in the form of sensible heat in gaseous and liquid effluents, latent heat in vapour effluents, radiation and convection from hot objects. The alternate energy sources like solar energy, geothermal energy, etc. are not used directly because of their relatively low grade. If these low grade heats are upgraded to high temperature, it can be again used as inputs for thermal machines and several industrial applications. The utilization of low grade heat would contribute not only to lower energy consumption, but also reduces the environmental pollution and creates a better working environment. Therefore, the research and development on the waste heat utilization is of great interest to the present scientific community. Hence, an attempt is being made in this direction to develop an energy conversion system, which upgrades the quality of industrial waste heat, solar energy, geothermal energy, etc. to the higher temperature levels.
